Opening Concert featuring Trowzer Boa - Jazz Sax & the Robot Band
Banned Books Week kicks off with SL Saxophonist Trowzer Boa.  Known as Dave Renz ( http://www.daverenz.com/) in real life, he has been playing professionally since the 1990’s.  Backed up by an interesting array of robot buddies you will find this performance innovative and exciting.

Book Challenges Panel Discussion (presented by the Community Virtual Library)

Three Kansas librarians will share their experiences with book challenges within their libraries or in an advisory role at a state library agency level.  Emily Baker (Olathe Public Library), Gina Millsap (Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library) and Jo Budler (State Library of Kansas) will share actions their libraries have taken in developing policies, procedures and responses to complaints and challenges against library material.  Time will be given for questions and further discussion with the audience.l.  Time will be given for questions and further discussion with the audience.

Book Discussion Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird (presented by Community Virtual Library)

HollyJean Allen leads a lively discussion about Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird.  Renown and also censored for its frank portrayal of racial inequality and rape, this American classic celebrates its 40th year this year.

Book Discussion: Ernest Hemigway’s Hills Like White Elephants
ALA Island Banned Books Town Square
Clicquot Oh leads a discussion group about Hemingway’s short story Hills Like White Elephants which was challenged in 2009 in Litchfield, N.H. Campbell High School when it was pulled from elective course classroom after parents voiced their concerns about a short-stories unit called “Love/Gender/Family Unit” that dealt with subject matters including abortion, cannibalism, homosexuality, and drug use. The parents said the stories promoted bad behavior and a “political agenda” and they shouldn’t be incorporated into classroom teachings.

Banned Books Week Trivia Game Show

In the style of “Jeopardy” our host Bryan Anderton will lead three lucky contestants through three rounds of banned book related trivia. As they play our contestants will gain (and lose) points. Once Final Jeopardy Round is played the contestant with the most points is declared the winner. And while winning itself is, of course, a huge honor, that's not all that's at stake! First prize takes home 500 L$ as well as those prestigious bragging rights. Not to worry, our runners up will be rewarded as well, as thanks for playing.

Banned Books Week Machinima Screening

ALA and the Office for Intellectual Freedom put out the call for submissions for our first ever Machinima Contest. We’ll be screening all of the entries and allowing the audience to cast their votes. After the jury discusses, winners will be announced. First prize is 10,000Ls.

Book Discussion: Aldous Huxley’s  Brave New World
ALA Island Banned Books Town Square
Clicquot Oh leads a discussion group about Huxley’s dystopian classic Brave New World which was challenged in 2000 in a Foley, AL High School Library because a parent complained that its characters showed contempt for religion, marriage, and family.  The book was also challenged, but retained in the South Texas Independent School District in Mercedes, TX in 2003 when parents objected to the adult themes - sexuality, drugs, suicide - that appeared in the novel.

Excerpts from banned and challenged books will be read aloud using voice chat. Participating readers will also discuss the titles they’ve selected.

Banned Books Week Closing Concert featuring Jewels Osterham
ALA Island Main Stage
Jewels has had a passion for music all of her life. As a teenager, Jewels had vocal and piano training. She is a huge fan of smooth jazz and pop music along with standards, blues and R&B.  A romantic at heart, Jewels favors love songs and ballads.  She has her own style and flair and enjoys the beautiful nightclubs of SL.

Banned Books Interactive Display
This interactive display, designed by Clicquot Oh, explains the reasons why some books have been challenged. On display at the I Love Libraries lounge on ALA Island through October 2nd.

FREE! Banned Books Week Robot and Robot Tiny Avatar
This year’s Banned Books Week mascot is an adorable robot and he’s available as a freebie either as a stand-alone interactive display or as a tiny avatar to wear. Both are available from vendors at the ALA Island Main Stage. (Built and scripted by Sept Doigts)

   2010 BBW Machinima Contest

As part of the celebration of Banned Books Week in Second Life, we’re inviting everyone to take part in our Banned Books Week in Second Life Machinima Contest. The theme for this year’s banned Books Week is “Think for yourself and let others do the same” and this should inspire the theme of your machinima entry.

Prizes: 

  • 1st Prize - 10,000 Lindens; BBW 2010 T-shirt; winning video featured on OIF Blog and in AL Direct
  • 2 Runners Up – BBW 2010 T-shirt; winning video featured on OIF Blog

Deadlines:

Submissions will be accepted between August 22, 2010 and September 25, 2010, participants can enter as many videos as they’d like.

Rules and Specs:

  • Videos should be at least 1 minute and no longer than 5 minutes
  • At least 60% of the video should be filmed in Second Life
  • Video should focus on Banned Books Week or a specific banned or challenged book(s) (some lists available here)
  • Video should not use any unlicensed copyrighted material
  • Participants should feel free to use the Banned Books Week graphics or elements available online, or visit ALA Island for more resources inworld.

Submitting you entry:

Video should be submitted via YouTube or BlipTV. Upload your video to either site and tag it with BBW10-SL and send the video’s url to ccoleman@ala.org.

Terms of Use:

You retain all ownership rights to your video submission, however by submitting you also grant the American Library Association permission to use your video for promotional and documentary purposes.

Audience participation vote:

Machinima will be screened in Second Life on Friday October 1, 2010 and those present will have the chance to vote for their favorite as well. This audience vote will be factored into the judges’ final decision.
