Creative Instructional Design in Academic Libraries

As higher education increasingly turns to technology and new models of educating students, academic libraries are also facing dramatic changes in the services they provide. Many libraries are responding to these changes by reimagining and redefining the development of its program and services. In this webcast, the presenters will explore the role of instructional design in higher education with regard to its influence on libraries. Specifically, the presenters will discuss the practical applications of instructional design in the creation of video tutorials, makerspaces, and experiential learning opportunities.

Brandon West is the Head of Research Instruction Services at the State University of New York at Geneseo. He is co-editor of the ACRL publication Creative Instructional Design: Practical Applications for Libraries. His research interests involve the intersections of pedagogy and information literacy, teacher-librarian education, and LGBTQ+ issues in libraries.

Michelle Costello has worked extensively with faculty to design online courses and serves as the Education and Community Engagement Librarian for SUNY Geneseo for the past nine years. She has been the co-principal investigator of the LILAC program, designed to give librarians new to instruction the pedagogical training and practice needed to teach library instruction. She received the 2011 ACRL IS Award for Innovative Instruction alongside Kimberly Davies-Hoffman.

Kimberly Davies Hoffman serves as the University of Rochester’s Head of Outreach, Learning, and Research Services at the River Campus Libraries. With interests in engaging pedagogy, instructional design, assessment, and creating professional development opportunities, she has been a founding member for programs like LILAC, the 3Ts, and RYSAG. Kimberly earned her MLS at the University at Buffalo and a BA in French and International Relations at the University of New Hampshire.

Justina Elmore serves as Outreach Librarian for the Social Sciences at the University of Rochester where she supports the scholarly pursuits of multiple departments and programs, actively participating in the research, teaching, and learning process in order to promote a dynamic, student-centered research environment that encourages inquiry, critical thinking and creativity. Justina holds a B. A. in English from the Colorado State University at Pueblo, an M.L.S. from the University of Buffalo, and is the author of a book chapter entitled “Embedded library instruction in experiential education courses: Perspectives from the inside” in the ACRL publication Creative Instructional Design: Practical Applications for Librarians.

Julia Feerrar is Head, Digital Literacy Initiatives at Virginia Tech Libraries where she is working to collaboratively develop new digital literacy programs for students. She completed her MS in Library Science at UNC Chapel Hill in May 2014. Her research interests include digital and information literacy, supporting and collaborating with graduate teaching assistants, designing scalable instruction models, and incorporating storytelling into teaching and learning.

Sharona Ginsberg works as Learning Technologies Librarian at SUNY Oswego's Penfield Library. She has a significant interest in library makerspaces, and was selected as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2015 for her work on MakerBridge, an online community focused on library and school makerspaces. She is also interested in issues of equity and social justice, serving LGBTQ patrons, and her dog, Bilbo Waggins.
