ACRL Travel Grants for National Library Legislative Day May 9-10, 2011

Are you:

  • Interested in federal legislation and policy affecting libraries?
  • Connected in your campus community?
  • Willing to work with your members of Congress for change?

ACRL needs you!

For the third year, ACRL is pleased to announce the availability of up to $250 each for 10 individuals to attend National Library Legislative Day from May 9-10, 2011, in Washington, D.C.

During NLLD, librarians, library staff, and library supporters from around the country converge on Capitol Hill to meet with their federal representatives to advocate for the support of libraries and library-friendly legislation. The first day is a day of orientation to advocacy and Capitol Hill; the second day is reserved for visits to Congressional offices and a closing reception. Information on NLLD registration and housing can be found on the ALA Web site.

Criteria for an ACRL NLLD Travel Grant:

  1. Must be an ACRL Legislative Advocate (application to be an Advocate will be accepted simultaneously with travel grant application)
  2. Must not have attended previous National Library Legislative Day events.
  3. Deadline for submitting travel grant requests is Friday, April 8, 2011
  4. First come-first served!

Being an ACRL Legislative Advocates is a wonderful way to provide service to the profession. You do not need to attend ALA Annual Conference, ALA Midwinter Conference, or National Library Day in Washington, DC. Whenever possible, ALA will provide “virtual participation” in these events, as well as virtual seminars and other advocacy training opportunities. Nor is it necessary to call upon your federal representatives in their Washington offices. It is often more effective to visit your Congressperson or Senator in their regional office back in their home district or invite them in to your library. And of course, other methods of communication (letter, phone call, email) are also encouraged. Find complete information on the ACRL Legislative Advocates program and application at: http://www.acrl.org/ala/mgrps/divs/acrl/issues/washingtonwatch/acrladvocates.cfm

Request a travel grant by sending an email to Kara Malenfant ( kmalenfant@ala.org) indicating that you meet the criteria above. Those selected will be notified by April 15, 2011. Reimbursement will be made following Library Advocacy Day upon receipt of reimbursement request and receipts for travel and/or hotel.
