Hello and welcome to EBSS!
When I think of EBSS, what first comes to mind is the warm welcome I received when I joined the section. I was a brand new librarian, in a completely new role, and I really felt lost. I remember sitting in on some EBSS committee meetings, just trying to become familiar with the resources in my field and I ended up learning so much more. I made connections with colleagues who quickly became mentors and friends. I knew from the beginning that I had found a professional home in EBSS.
The EBSS membership is at the heart of what makes the section such a wonderful place to be. From our listserv to committee projects to current topics discussions, there are numerous ways to get involved and stay connected. EBSS is very much driven by our members so if you have an ideas for how to improve the section, I’m happy to work with you and other EBSS leaders to explore how to make it a reality.
This is an exciting time to be a part of EBSS! At the 2018 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our section and the 50th Anniversary Committee is planning events that will honor all that the section members have accomplished.
Anniversaries are not only a great time to acknowledge all that you’ve achieved, but also to explore what comes next. In that vein, I intend to spend my time as chair focusing on growing the section membership and exploring ways to collaborate with other ALA and ACRL groups so that we can introduce the section’s great work to more and more people. Ultimately I aim to perpetuate the warm welcome I first received when I joined EBSS.
Thank you to the EBSS membership for electing me to be the 2017-2018 chair and to the past and present section leadership for all their work and wisdom. I look forward to a wonderful year!
Joyce, EBSS Chair, 2017 - 2018
