Thanks to a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), 23 institutions will be participating in the Association of College and Research Libraries' (ACRL) project "Assessing Student Learning Outcomes in Information Literacy Programs: Training Academic Librarians."
The project trains academic librarians to work with faculty to design, implement and evaluate tools that will assess student learning as a result of information literacy instruction, and will not only enhance the status of librarians as educators, but also highlight the importance of campus information literacy programs. Campus partnerships will help define student learning outcomes based on the new "Standards for Information Literacy Competence for Higher Education."
Institutions throughout the United States, including four-year public and private colleges, community colleges and comprehensive and research universities, have been chosen to participate in the project. The 23 institutions are: Western State College; Dakota State University; Indiana Purdue University, Columbus; Lewis and Clark College; Oberlin College; Illinois Wesleyan University; St. Olaf College; Lexington Community College; Diablo Valley College; Tompkins Courtland Community College; Spokane Falls Community College; Highline Community College; Midlands Technical College; University of the Pacific; California State University Northridge; Millersville University; Appalachian State University; Austin Peay State University; Hunter College; University of Cincinnati; Regent University; University of Northern Colorado; and Montana State University Bozeman.
Librarians from the institutions will work together under the guidance of Dr. Nana Lowell, associate director of the office of educational assessment at the University of Washington. Results of the project will be available at the 2002 American Library Association (ALA) Conference in Atlanta.
